John Robinson is trapped by an alien spirit who attempts to possess his mind and body.
A sudden quake has hurled John to the bottom of a cave as rocks and dirt seal the entrance. Smith runs back to the Jupiter 2 to tell the others who mobilize to dig John out. John, meanwhile, has found himself in a subterranean chamber with strange objects, such as a weird sarcophagus. An alien voice issues from the sarcophagus and explains that he is an old warrior who intends to take over John's body.
That night, after Don, Maureen, Judy, Will, Penny and Smith have returned to the Jupiter 2, John suddenly appears, having been released by the alien. The next morning at breakfast, he suddenly turns on Smith. Maureen calms him, thinking that he just needs more rest. Supplying him with advanced fuel calculations, the alien orders him to prepare the ship for departure. But in John's quarters, Smith is warned by the alien voice not to interfere. The Robot reports to the others that John
is possessed by an alien spirit and that time is short before he will be taken over completely.
The alien tells John that others must be removed. Will follows his father through the dark, to the cave where John violently orders him to forget about anything he has seen. Some time later Don, Maureen and Judy set out in search of John. They find him in the cave, masked and dressed in a futuristic uniform. He is now almost entirely Canto, an alien from the planet Quasti. Don tries to jump John, but he easily subdues him and locks the three in the cave.
The next morning, John shows up with the mask over his face, and he requests their aid in traveling to Quasti to rescue the others who, he claims, have been taken there. Will does not believe him. John offers to prove that all his claims are true and he takes Will to an abyss reaching to the planet's core, intending to push the boy off the cliff. Will requests that he take off his mask so he can have one last look at his father's face. John complies, and Will says goodbye, explaining that he loves him. With this, John falters in his resolve, and Will explains further that they all love him. By this time the alien is driven from John's body and he returns to normal. Everyone is reunited back at the spaceship.
