Will and Smith penetrate the sixth dimension with diverging results.
Climbing to a distant promontory to investigate a glinting object in the distance, Will rescues Smith when the ground gives way under him. They discover a compact alien spacecraft. John, Don and Maureen arrive and warn Will to stay away from the ship. The Robot determines that the ship may be capable of penetrating the sixth dimension.
As John, Don and Maureen leave, Smith lingers with Will and the Robot. He orders the Robot to make a closer investigation but a blast from the ship immobilizes the mechanical man. That night, Will returns to repair the Robot who relays that the ship is operational. Will enters and starts pushing controls.
Suddenly the ship lifts off and Will is shot into the sixth dimension. When he returns to his family he is intellectually developed beyond his and the others' years. Smith, seeing the possibilities for power, tries to persuade Will to send him on a trip. Finally Will gives in and explains how to activate the vehicle. But Smith's trip turns him into a decrepit old man.
While Smith sputters from his wheel chair, Will, John and Don try to figure .out ways to return Smith to normal. They attempt building a simulated extra-galactic chamber but it explodes and destroys itself.
Will feels that the only answer is a test flight in the actual vehicle during which he would reverse the guidance system. Will takes off on his own and the rest of the party rush to the promontory to await his return. They find a second spaceship from which emerges an ugly creature. The creature demands the return of his other spaceship.
Will returns, restored to his old boyish self, and explains to the alien the whole harmless story. He beseeches the alien to take Smith on a trip to return him to normal and he does so. Smith returns, back to normal, with a message from the alien explaining that he did it for Will, of whom he was fond.
On another day, as Smith lowers John over a ledge to retrieve a gun, a quake strikes and Smith flees, dropping John in the process...
