Smith is nearly sacrificed during a primitive rite.
Dr. Smith calls for Will and the Robot to help him remove an alien crown from his head, and at Will's mere touch it floats off. When the boy places it on his own head, a fanfare of trumpets is heard, and courtly Nexus and eight other alien attendants appear from a hidden cave. Nexus explains that the crown has chosen Will to be king of their luxurious planet, Andronica. Will is not interested. Smith explains to the alien that he is the only member of their party who possesses the cunning necessary to rule a large civilization. Nexus decrees that Smith will be their king.
At the cave, Smith tries to persuade Will to go with him to Andronica as heir apparent. Will declines. Inside the cave, Smith is confronted by a great ugly alien who explains that he is really an Andronican and that Nexus and the others are androids he made to seduce Smith into being their sacrificial king. In actuality, Smith has been chosen for his uselessness, to be skinned and stuffed.
The Robot, meanwhile, has taken the initiative to distort the alien's communications to its mother ship. John, Don and the Robot decide to try to get Smith back, but the alien creates an android Smith and sends him out to greet the Robinsons. The android Smith bewilders everyone by working hard.
Perplexed, but believing him to be the real Smith, John and Don decide to have the Robot clear the alien's communications. The real Smith escapes his captor. Beseeching the Robinsons to keep him, the android Smith extols his own good qualities in explaining that the alien will come for the real, useless Smith very soon. But the real Smith cleverly appeals to the android Smith's selfless nobility of character and persuades him to offer himself instead. When the alien sends Nexus and other androids to get Smith, the real Smith poses as the android Smith by working diligently in front of the spaceship, while the alien Smith, feigning to be the real Smith, gives himself up.
In a blinding flash, the aliens and the android Smith are gone. Only now does Smith reveal what actually happened, explaining that once they discover that they have the second, useful Smith, they will surely let him go.
