The Robinson family becomes lost in space when enemy agent Dr. Zachary Smith sabotages their mission.
It is October 16, 1997, two hours before the launching of the first settlers to a planet orbiting the star Alpha Centauri. As the nation listens to the countdown, Dr. Zachary Smith enters the heavily-guarded space vehicle and reprograms the ship's environmental control robot for a mission of destruction. Dr. John Robinson, his wife, Maureen, and their three children, Will, Penny and Judy, are brought aboard to meet with the pilot, Don West.
As they enter their suspended animation tubes, Smith secretly activates the Robot. The doctor is delayed, however, and cannot exit the ship in time. Realizing he is trapped, Smith attempts to brace himself for take-off. He is knocked unconscious, but once in space, he regains consciousness and attempts to radio his enemy headquarters for further instructions. Unable to pilot the ship, Smith uses a laser gun to blast West's tube and revive the pilot. Discovering that Smith's extra weight has put them off course, West decides to wake the Robinsons.
While West attempts to maneuver the ship, Smith sneaks off to deactivate the Robot before it embarks on its terrible mission. But surprised by sudden weightlessness, he floats away from the Robot. Only at the very last minute is he able to disconnect the power pack. Will appears and suspects Smith of foul play. Smith fools Will into believing that he has a dangerous virus on his tongue and tells him to remain in the lower deck "in quarantine," while Smith himself rejoins the others above.
While Smith is gone, Will innocently reconnects the power pack. The Robot reactivates and moves through the ship, destroying instruments and equipment before Don is able to disconnect it. The damaged Jupiter 2 soars beyond the limits of the galaxy and becomes hopelessly lost in space. The navigational scanner must be repaired and John suits up for a space walk to fix it. But, unaccustomed to gravity's absence, he misjudges his movements and snaps his tether line, sending him drifting helplessly into space.
