The Jupiter 2 almost returns to Earth, but Smith is lured into space by a seductive Space Lorelei and causes the spaceship to change course.
As the Jupiter 2 hurtles through space, Smith reveals that he has
calculated a course forEarth and lunges for the astrogator. Don tries to
pull the doctor away from the device, but the spaceship veers out of
control until John manages to level the ship. When John checks the
figures with the Robot, he learns that the course is not advisable
because the sun will come between them and the Earth. Later, Smith
sneaks up to the astrogator, and finding it locked, uses his magnetic
ring to draw the compass reading for an Earth course. When the Robot
reminds him that he must reprogram for fuel, Smith starts throwing
switches.
An alarm goes off, signaling that he has dumped their reserve fuel into
space. Don and John, resetting the switches, order Smith to his
compartment. As they near a string of fuel barges, Will spots a greenish
haze near them. When Don goes out to attach the fuel line he thinks he
sees a figure. After leaving the barges and heading again for Alpha
Centauri, Smith plays on Penny's sympathies to change the course on the
astrogator. While she is gone, Smith is startled by a Space Lorelei
outside his viewport. During the night, the temperature rises, alerting
John and Don that they are headed for the sun.
Penny confesses her deed, but by using manual controls, John is able to
skirt the sun. They have just enough fuel for one course change, and
since Earth is closer than Alpha Centauri, John heads for home. But
Smith is lured out of the ship by the Lorelei, and everyone watches them
cavort in space as the ship gets farther and farther away. John decides
a new course change is necessary to rescue Smith, and Don suits up to
bring him in. John then learns from Alpha Control that they are passing
out of the Earth's galaxy and heading for outer space. The course change
to rescue Smith ruins their chances of returning to Earth. But John
refuses to be discouraged. They are sure to land somewhere.
Ray Says: A great second season story with a wonderful script. Dr Smith almost gets the J2 back to Earth
