The Robinsons build a small space vehicle utilizing parts of the Jupiter 2 with the hope of sending Major West on a test flight, but Dr. Smith steals the ship and heads to Earth.
Maureen and the others watch in horror as an S.O.S. space probe explodes above Penny, John
and Will. Fortunately, no one is hurt. When it is discovered that Will's experiment used the last of their fuel, John and Don develop a plasma propellant which tests successfully in the lab. But when they test the new rocket fuel in the spacecraft's engines, the machinery fails and bursts into flames.
While Smith goads Don of his incompetence, Will suggests that they i construct a ship small enough to be launched by balloon. Don and John build their space craft utilizing the reactor chamber and other parts from the Jupiter 2. Smith, however, plans to hijack the ship, and he posts the Robot by the craft with instructions to cut it loose at his command. As Will surveys the results of his inspiration, he is startled when Smith appears
from inside the ship and invites him in. Smith explains that he is making last minute checks on the equipment. On these last words, the Robot casts them off. Will wants to radio his father, but Smith tells him it is useless, as the ship soars into space.
Suddenly, a planet appears on their view screen that Smith believes to be Earth, though Will does not recognize the surrounding stars or planets. The boy lands the ship on the planet, and as they head toward civilization, they become trapped in dense foreign vegetation. As the overgrowth closes them in, Smith and Will are horrified to see a creature approaching through the vines.
Meanwhile, John and Don have picked up a signal and start off in search of its source. A radio falls from Smith's pocket and Will makes surprised contact with his father, who says they have spotted the ship and are on their way. Smith and Will run to the wall to escape as the creature comes after them. Suddenly Don appears and drops the creature with his gas gun. John explains that the little rocket did not have enough thrust to get them out of the planet's gravity. Later, John, Will and Don embark in the Chariot on an expedition to build a microwave relay station. Suddenly, they are caught in a giant meteor storm.
