Escaping a fiery death from the planet's sun, the Robinsons manage to guide the Chariot across the inland sea to the temporary safety of their spaceship.
The Robinsons and West take refuge from an electrical storm in a mysterious cave. Will and Penny stumble into a room housing an eerie mummy and become trapped when a wall closes behind them. West and Judy find the room and become trapped as well. From the outside, John blasts a hole in the wall with his laser gun, releasing the foursome before an earthquake destroys the cave.
As John steers the Chariot south, Smith, back at the spaceship, has discovered from the Robot's data that the temperature is beginning to rise. He attempts to radio the others with this news but West and John refuse to listen. When the party stops for breakfast, John discovers that the vegetation of the arid land bears signs of being alternately burned and frozen. The Robot, sent by Smith to warn them, appears and West, thinking it may destroy them, blasts it with his laser gun.
Reprimanding West, John works to fix the mechanical man during most of the night. At dawn, he discovers the message the Robot carries -a description of the strange planet's elliptical orbit, indicating that within a matter of hours the sun will pass quickly but closely overhead. Everyone huddles under protective shields and the sun fills the sky, burning off the sparse vegetation. Heading back across the now thawed sea, the space pioneers are hit by another electrical storm. West climbs outside the Chariot's hatch to fix malfunctioning solar cells and is carried out into the turbulent sea.
The Chariot is pulled into a whirlpool and everyone gives up hope for West -but unknown to them he has managed to hang onto the outside of the craft. Finally making it back to the spaceship, everyone pitches in to set up protection against the elements. Will operates the radio in a vain attempt to contact help. An electrical storm hits and John scolds Will for leaving the radio on during the storm, explaining that the strong signal it transmits can act as a homing beam for whatever unknown elements might respond from space.
